Writing Contest Submission Guidelines

The Josephs Inkwell writing contest seeks writing in two categories: 

  • Essay, narrative, story, or poetry with Jewish themes.

  • research paper, philosophical discussion, or lesson learned from personal experience with a Jewish theme.

  • A prize of $500 sponsored by Temple Emanu-El of Atlanta will be awarded to the best submission in both categories and many of the top submissions will be displayed on the website.

  • Entries will be read by a panel of Jewish teens. They will look for creativity, originality, thought, relevance to the times, and quality of writing. Author information and identifiers will be concealed from the panel of readers until prizes are announced.

  • All essays should be between 500 to 2,000 words in length and present Jewish themes or ideas.

  • Poetry should be no more than 2 pages in length, up to 5 poems per submission and present Jewish themes.

  • The contest is open to teens (13-19 years old) writing in English.

  • Entries should be sent to josephsinkwell@gmail.com as a Google doc link.

  • They must be received by August 1st, 2024.

  • All entries should include the author's name, age, photo & short blurb about the author (2-3 sentences, for the bio if the submission is posted), and relevant contact information.

  • Joseph’s Inkwell will have the right to publish any work entered into the contest.
